AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron women's tennis head coach Brandon Padgett announced on Monday that Marta Briega has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Zips starting in the fall semester of 2013.
"I am excited to have Marta join our tennis family this coming fall," Padgett said. "She will be part of a talented group of young ladies, and we expect great things from her. We will be an extremely young team, with four freshmen, but we could not be more excited about the direction of the program."
Briega, a native of Madrid, Spain, was crowned champion of the Master Circuit Yonex and XXXI Open San Fernando events in 2012-13. Additionally over the last year, she was a finalist at the Circuit Head Jovenes Talentos and Club Republic Space tournaments as well as posting semifinal finishes at five other outings.
She joins Caroline Harpaintner, Shannon Newnes and Karalina Maksimava on UA's newcomers list for the 2013-14 season. Harpaintner and Maksimava signed an NLI in November 2012, while Newnes did so in April.
The Zips closed the 2012-13 season with an 18-10 record (5-3 Mid-American Conference) and advanced to the MAC tournament's semifinal round for the fourth-straight season and fourth time in program history in April. The squad ended the year ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Midwest region.
