Women's Tennis Posts 4-1 Mark in Day One of Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. –The Zips women's tennis team posted a 4-1 record on Friday in day one of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational at Michigan State. The three-day event is being held at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

UA junior Olga Shkundina led the way by posting a pair of victories in flight A singles to advance to bracket's semifinal round. She topped IPFW's Mila Shustova 6-1, 6-2 and Michigan State's Emily Meyers 6-4, 6-1. Shkundina will face MSU's Erin Faulkner in the semifinal.

In flight B singles, Zips freshman Shannon Newnes earned a 6-4, 6-2 opening round win over IPFW's Carlota Trevino and then lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 to Toledo's Kayleigh Hall.

Shkundina and Newnes joined forces in flight A doubles and scored an 8-1 win over Toledo's Pia Rygh and Emily Mazzola in the opening round. They will take on Michigan State's Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot in the quarterfinal.

The event continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET.
