Shkundina Competes in Midwest Regional Singles Main Draw

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Zips junior Olga Shkundina posted an opening round victory in the singles main draw on Saturday during day three of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.

Shkundina defeated Michigan's Sara Remynse 6-4, 6-4 in the bracket's opening round, then lost 6-2, 6-2 to Northwestern's Veronica Corning in the round of 32.

Shkundina was one of three UA players selected to compete in the event. She teamed with freshman Shannon Newnes in the doubles main draw and the duo advanced to the round of 32. Zips senior Ksenia Berestetska competed in the qualifying singles draw, where she earned an opening round bye and was then defeated in the round of 32.

The Midwest Regional is the final event on Akron's fall schedule. The Zips start spring competition on Jan. 17 at West Virginia.
