AKRON, Ohio -- University of Akron tennis coaches Brandon Padgett and Brian Peters have been selected to represent northeast Ohio as coaches in the 2014 Baird Cup on June 13-15. The event is sponsored by the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
Padgett will serve as the head coach for the 18-and-under girls team in the Marian Wood Baird Cup, held at the University of Illinois Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill.
"It is a great honor and wonderful opportunity to represent northeast Ohio as the coach for such a prestigious event like the Baird Cup," said Padgett. "It has been awhile since I coached high school aged players. I am looking forward to the interaction that will occur, and the ability to hopefully have a lasting impact on these young players."
Teams comprised of the best 18-and-under girls from each of the Midwest Section's 14 Districts participate in the annual event, which uses a round-robin format. Following two days of round-robin competition, the top four players advance to a playoff. Juniors competing on each district team are selected to participate based on their ranking, tournament play, character, and sportsmanship.
Peters will lead the region's 14-and-under boys and girls teams in the District Team Cup competition on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
"I am thankful for the chance to coach some of the best players from northeast Ohio and be a part of such a great event," Peters said. "I am looking forward to working with the players and having fun in the process."
The USTA/Midwest Section Boys' and Girls' 14 District Team Cup event started in 2005. The event is also a round-robin format.
