CLEVELAND, Ohio – Akron senior Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) was named the Mid-American Conference women's tennis singles Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Additionally, Newnes earned Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week honors, presented by The University of Akron.
"Shannon has continued to play better as the season has progressed, and her undefeated record is a result of her extremely hard work and dedication," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "She started the season out of the line-up and worked hard day in and day out, and once given the opportunity to break into the line-up, she never looked back. I'm proud of the effort and determination she has shown, especially in this, her senior season."
Newnes (13-0 overall, 7-0 MAC) remained unbeaten in singles action this spring, helping her team to 22 consecutive match victories and a perfect 7-0 record in MAC play.
In her final match at home, Newnes beat Bowling Green's Ayumo Sasaki in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 4 singles.
Overall, the team captain is 19-3 in singles, including 13-0 this spring. In MAC action, she stands 7-0.
The MAC singles Player of the Week honor is Newnes' first. She is the fourth Zip to earn recognition in singles play this spring, joining junior Sophia Geier who has earned it three times (Feb. 1, March 22, and April 12). Geier and partner Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) won MAC doubles Team of Week on March 1.
Riding a 22-match winning streak, Akron (23-2 overall, 7-0 MAC) closes out the regular-season at defending MAC champion Ball State (19-2 overall, 7-0 MAC) on Saturday, April 22, in a 1 p.m. match to determine the 2017 MAC regular-season champion.
