Men Finish 13th at Great Lakes Region Championships; Women place 23rd
TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams were in action Saturday at the 2011 Great Lakes Region championship meet at Ottawa Park.
With 408 points, the Zips' men placed 13th while the women finished 23rd with 651 points. Wisconsin, which entered the meet ranked No. 1 in the country, won the team title with 50 points. No. 19 Michigan captured the team title on the women's side with 45 points.
Sophomore Brad Hough was UA's top finisher in the men's 10k, placing 18th individually with a time of 30:43.7. Senior Brian Cull came in next for UA with a time of 31:45.4 and a 68th-place finish, followed by junior Zachary Goulet, who clocked 32:22.3 while coming in 97th.
Juniors Nick Stroemple (32:33.2) and Heath Harris (32:42.7) rounded out the list of Akron scorers, placing 109th and 116th, respectively.
Sophomore Alexsandra Bowers was the Zips' top finisher on the women's side, finishing the 6k in 22:31.0 for a 98th-place designation, and was followed by fellow sophomore Kayla Whitlow, who came in 106th with a time of 22:39.2.
Freshman Maria Moore came in next with a time of 22:55.6 (122nd) ahead of her high school teammate Morgan Willis, who clocked a time of 23:28.4 (154). Sophomore Sarah Baker, who ran 23:57.0 (173rd), rounded out the list of women's scorers for Akron.
The Great Lakes Region included 34 teams in the women's race and 31 teams in the men's race.
