CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team had a tough opening day at the Viking Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State, on Friday.
The Zips opened with singles play and fell to West Virginia, 5-1. In her first action of the fall, sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) claimed UA's sole win with a 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-7 fight with Christina Jordan at No. 1 singles.
"Today was definitely a struggle for us, overall, but a day for teaching and learning," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "It is our job as coaches to help put each student-athlete in position to succeed, and their job to listen, learn, and progress. We have players right now that have immense talent, but don't truly know how to play at this level. Match play is extremely important for each player's development, and days like today have great value. We saw this with Rita last year, as she went through her own growing pains, and what I am seeing from her in only her second year is transformational. She is extremely driven and stubborn, yet also willing to listen and learn. Her dominant, yet supportive personality, adds a fun dimension to or team dynamic, which makes her an ideal player and teammate."
In double action, Akron dropped a 2-1 decision to Cincinnati and a 3-0 sweep to Cleveland State. Against the Bearcats, the No. 3 doubles tandem of junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) defeated Antonella Bramato and Alexia Coutino, 7-6 (5).
"Carli and Waverly continue to lead by example when it comes to playing doubles," Padgett said. "Their level of consistent and intelligent strategic play is what we need all of our players to model their doubles after. Improving upon your strategy and execution doesn't always produce a win, but it puts you in position to achieve victory, which is all we ever ask for. The wins will come, when each player reaches a level of determination and willingness to play within the proper construct of the game. We have the talent to be extremely competitive this season, but we need each player to follow the lead of our seniors, and be willing to work each and every day, no matter how frustrated they get, to continue to grow and develop their game. Stability is key, both physically and mentally, and right now, we need more stability. Tennis is a simple game in its truest form, but far from simple to play. The better players are capable of linking the physical to the mental. We have the players to accomplish this task, and we will work together to make it happen."
Play continues at the Viking Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7, as the Zips face host Cleveland State in doubles action at 11:30 a.m., followed by doubles against West Virginia, and singles against Cincinnati. All matches will be played at CSU's Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion (2005 Chester Avenue).
