CLEVELAND, Ohio – On the final day of competition at the Viking Invitational, the University of Akron women's tennis team captured a 2-1 doubles win over Cincinnati on Sunday.
At No. 1 doubles, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) defeated Alexia Coutino and Emma Miceli, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) beat Ellee Bullock and Amanda Huser, 6-1.
"Today was a much better overall day for us. We came out with a purpose in doubles, and played at a definitively higher level overall," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "Luisa and Waverly did an outstanding job all weekend, showing what can happen when you communicate with your partner, and have an understanding of not just how to strategically play doubles, but also understanding how your partner likes to play and the shots they like to hit."
The Zips fell in singles action to host Cleveland State, 4-2. The Zips earned wins at No. 5 as Echeverry defeated Anastasia Perin, 6-1, 6-2, and at No. 6 where junior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) beat Kristina Fernandez, 7-5, 6-4.
"Singles was better today, but still not where we need it to be," Padgett said. "We started off extremely slow on several courts, and weren't able to complete the comebacks. Carla and Luisa played strong singles today, and dictated the style and pace of play to their opponents consistently."
Akron travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 12-16.
"We need to do a better job of starting matches quicker, and for some, learning how to truly construct a point at this level, and to deal with their emotions in a more positive manner."
