Akron travels to Troy (Ala.) for its final non-conference contest on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT) at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
ESPN3 will televise the game with Tiffany Green (play-by-play) and Hutson Mason (analyst) calling the game. Â
The Zips' radio broadcast will air on the Akron-IMG Sports Network [SportsRadio 1350 AM (WARF) in Akron (flagship), 1420 WHK in Cleveland, 1440 WHKZ in Warren/Youngstown] with Steve French calling the action, Brad Detwiler providing analysis, and Joe Dunn with sideline report. The pregame show starts one hour prior to kickoff. Under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Terry Bowden, Akron stands 1-2 on the season after a 41-14 loss to Iowa State. UA returns 57 lettermen, including 15 starters. The Zips utilize a spread offense and a 4-3 defense.
Senior RB Warren Ball (Columbus, Ohio) is the team's leading rusher with 239 yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries. Under center, senior QB Thomas Woodson (Monroeville, Pa.) is 52-of-84 for 477 yards and three touchdowns. Senior WR Tra'Von Chapman (Cincinnati, Ohio) is the top receiver with 16 receptions for 118 yards. Defensively, junior LB Ulysees Gilbert III (Ocala, Fla.) leads the defense with 27 tackles, a sack, and an interception.
In the NCAA stats, Akron is tied as the national leader in red zone offense with a perfect 100 percent (7-for-7). The Zips are No. 46 in tackles for loss (7.0). Individually, redshirt senior RB Warren Ball is ranked No. 28 in total touchdowns (4), while redshirt junior DE Jamal Davis II (Canton, Ohio) is No. 26 in tackles for loss (1.7).
The Trojans, under the guidance of third-year head coach Neal Brown, stand 2-1 on the season after a 27-24 win at New Mexico State. Troy returns 54 letterwinners, including 17 starters, to its spread offensive and 4-2-5 defensive schemes.
Senior RB Jordan Chunn is Troy's top rusher with 189 yards and four touchdowns on 44 carries. Senior QB Brandon Silvers is 74-of-114 for 770 yards and a touchdown. Senior WR Emanuel Thompson is the leading receiver with 109 yards on 14 receptions. Defensively, sophomore LB Tron Folsom has 15 tackles and a break-up.
In the NCAA stats, Troy is ranked No. 22 in punt returns (14.00) and No. 22 in rushing defense (94.3).
AKRON-TROY CONNECTIONS
Akron has no players from Alabama on its roster.
Troy has no players from Ohio on its roster either.
Akron head coach Terry Bowden returns to the South. He coached at Samford (Ala.) University for six seasons (1987 to 1992) where his team faced Troy State twice. In 1991, Samford claimed a 24-22 win at home. In 1992, Troy State captured a 29-24 home win over Samford. Â
After a 10-year stint with ABC sports, Bowden returned to coaching and spent three seasons at North Alabama (2009 to 2011) before taking the reigns at Akron.

Senior QB Thomas Woodson carried the offense with 240 yards of the Zips 331 yards of total offense. He completed 25-of-40 passes with two touchdowns.
Junior WR Kwadarrius Smith led the receiving corps with 76 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Senior WR Tra'Von Chapman followed, catching eight passes for 53 yards, while senior WR A.J Coney had four receptions for 52 yards.

The rushing attack was led by senior RB Warren Ball with 11 carries for 46 yards. Ball also had four receptions for eight yards with his first career receiving touchdown.
The Zips' defensive unit was led by junior LB Ulysees Gilbert III, who posted a team-best with 12 tackles. Junior LB Jamal Davis II recorded six tackles, including a team-high 1.5 tackles for a loss, and senior S Zach Guiser and junior CB Darian Dailey also recorded six tackles.

POSTGAME NOTES
- Redshirt junior WR Kwadarrius Smith (Orlando, Fla.) put UA on the scoreboard with a 45-yard TD reception in the second quarter. The touchdown was Smith's first this season and the second of his career. It was also his longest career reception.
- Senior RB Warren Ball had an 11-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. It marked the first receiving TD of Ball's career. He had a career-high four receptions for eight yards and a touchdown.
- Senior QB Thomas Woodson went 25-of-40 for 240 yards and two touchdowns. With his two passing TDs, Woodson moved into second place on Akron's career list for passing touchdowns, surpassing Luke Getsey (2005-06) who had 41. Charlie Frye (2001-04) holds the career record with 64 passing touchdowns.
- Redshirt freshman Nate Stewart (Bethlehem, Pa.) made a 32- yard reception, the second catch of his collegiate career and the longest so far.
- Redshirt sophomore QB Nick Johns (Leesburg, Va.) saw action on the kickoff return unit.
- The attendance of 22,811 is the third largest crowd since InfoCision Stadium– Summa Field opened in 2009.
