AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team concluded its own Akron Shootout on Sunday with a 3-3 tie with Oakland in singles action and a 2-1 loss to Youngstown State in doubles action.
Following the three-day tournament, freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) and junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) were named Flight Winners in singles action.
"Today was the best overall that we played this weekend," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "Anna and Waverly stepped up and won their first ever match together in doubles, which was great to see. I was also impressed with Carli and Madison in doubles this weekend. They only won one match out of three, but put themselves in position to win more, and really played much better together after the first day."
In singles action, freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) captured a hard-fought 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) win over Oakland's Allison Motea at the No. 2 spot for her first collegiate singles win. At No. 3 singles, Uljanov defeated Alexandra Whall, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (9). At No. 6 singles, Echeverry beat Sofia Borcuti, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, Uljanov and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) won Akron's sole match with a 6-4 victory over Youngstown State's Lucia Zagar and Cassandra Moraleja.
"In singles, we saw some definite growth on court from many players," Padgett continued. "We asked for specific things this weekend, not focusing on the end results, and I am very pleased with the progress made from day one to day three. Anna and Luisa won their respective flights, which was great to see, especially considering the fact that we asked Anna to play a style of tennis she isn't used to playing. Our focus in the fall is on learning and developing, and we saw a lot of that this weekend. We have much to work on, and will get started right away."
Akron travels to the Wright State Invitational on Sept. 29-30 in Dayton, Ohio.
