DAYTON, Ohio – On the final day of women's tennis action at Wright State's Raider Invitational, Akron junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) each finished third in their respective singles flights on Saturday.
Â
In Flight 2 singles, Echeverry beat out IUPUI's Kristina Tinsley, 6-3, 6-2, to finish third.
Â
In Flight 5 singles, Wituski defeated Bowling Green's Sidney Reineke in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to claim third.
Â
"From a singles perspective, we saw up and down play throughout the weekend, but everyone finished strong today," said head coach Brandon Padgett. Â "Luisa did an excellent job of putting her last match from yesterday behind her, and came out and dictated play from start to finish. Â Playing in the second flight was a good challenge for her, and she showed she can handle that level of play when she's focused and willing to listen and implement a quality strategy."
Â
In Flight 4 consolation singles, junior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) won the consolation bracket in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Northern Kentucky's Sydney Power.
Â
"Carla lost a tough first round match against the eventual champion from her flight, and then proceeded to dominate her next two opponents," Padgett continued. "We are very pleased with the progress we saw from her on the singles court this weekend. Â Waverly battled through some physical issues in her first round match, also losing to the eventual flight champion, but was also able to come back today and play very solid tennis. Â She is striking the ball better than she ever has, and once she gets more comfortable with the new serve component of her game, she will be a dangerous player for anyone to play. Â Her commitment to improving her game and the hard work she put in this summer is starting to really show in matches. Â It will all come together for her soon, and I couldn't be more proud of her growth."
Â
In doubles action, Echeverry and Wituski dropped two matches in Flight 2. The duo fell to IUPUI's Mariella Pessina and Krystal Grubb, 6-3, before losing to Northern Kentucky's Maria Koo and Sydney Power, 6-4.
Â
"Doubles continues to be a struggle for us for the second tournament in a row," Padgett said. Â "Our overall communication, intensity, focus, and decision making needs to get better. Â Waverly played solid doubles throughout the weekend, and continues to lead her teammates on the doubles court. Â We need to see a better response to that leadership from her teammates. Â Our focus this week will be primarily on improving our overall doubles in all aspects of the game!"
Â
Akron participated in the Cleveland State Invitational on Oct. 6-8. Action begins at 9 a.m. each day.
