AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips dropped doubleheader to Western Michigan by scores of 2-1 and 12-0 on Saturday at Skeeles Field.
Â
Western Michigan and Akron only managed three hits each in game one of the doubleheader as graduate student Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.), graduate student Jackson Haas (Cincinnati, OH) and senior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) pounded out singles for the Zips. WMU plated two runs in the third inning and Akron cut the lead in half in the fourth inning as Wargo scored on a WMU failed pick-off attempt. The Zips had Reinhart in scoring position in the sixth, but could not push him across the plate. Despite the setback, Akron sophomore starting pitcher Anthony Fett (Orchard Lake, Mich.) had a tremendous outing, throwing the complete 7-inning game while allowing one earned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Â
In the second game, the Broncos used three doubles and a base hit to generate four runs in the first inning. The Broncos added five in the fourth and three in the sixth to complete the 12-0 shutout. Zips freshman Cameron Benson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) had two of Akron's five hits while Pennington, Shellenbarger and Granger rounded out the offensive efforts. Granger collected the Zips' only extra-base hit of the day with a double to right center field.
Â
The Zips and the Broncos will be back in action on Sunday, April 10 at Skeeles Filed. No stream available for the final game of the series. Fans can follow the action via live stats on GoZips.com
